First Business: Zip2 (1995-1999)
After dropping out of a Ph.D. program at Stanford, Musk co-founded Zip2, a company that helped newspapers create online directories.
Initially, he slept in the office and worked day and night to grow the business.
In 1999, Compaq bought Zip2 for $307 million, and Musk made $22 million from the deal.
